POOR SERVANT OF THE MOTHER OF GOD

Poor Servant of the Mother of God –  Sister Martha Marie, S.M.G.

Foundress:  Frances Margaret Taylor  (Mother Mary Magdalen)   † a convert to Catholicism †

Place:  London, England

Year:  1869 A.D.

Her Charism:  Journeying in hope, this Sister is dedicated to clothe the poor with the dignity of a person touched by Christ.  Her foundress, having served beside Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War (South Soviet Russia), understood the importance of being a voice for the voiceless, and caring for the poor – not only by doling out alms of this world’s goods but by those words and acts which make them feel one hope, see one end, and know one Master.  Based on the Rule of St. Ignatius, the works of this Sister include the operation of school on all levels, boarding and day schools, orphanages, hospitals, homes for the mentally ill and the aged.  She visits the poor in their homes and brings the gifts of a smile and gentleness to all.  As her foundress admonished her: “Have a right good time in your mission.”
