OBLATE SISTER OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
Oblate Sister of the Blessed Sacrament – Sister Katharine Mary Tekakwitha, O.S.B.S. “The Catholic Mission of the Yankton Sioux People”
Founders: Saint Katharine Drexel Reverend Sylvester Eisenman, O.S.B.
Place: Marty, South Dakota
Year: 1935 A.D.
Her Charism: This Eucharist-centered Sister embodies the charism of St. Katharine Drexel and lives a “racial apostolate” dedicated to educating Native American Indians. She offers herself through a variety of ministries in helping them realize they are deeply loved by God. In so doing, she gives our Native American brothers and sisters the opportunity to experience the highest form of spiritual dignity and respect devoid of racial discrimination. By presenting the Gospel message in a way that enters into, respects, and celebrates their culture, this Sister recognizes the indispensable gift they are to the Church – the Mystical Body of Christ. While promoting various services of education, mercy work, healing, pastoral and other social services, this Sister is a “true bedrock” of the community who invites members of all cultures and tribes to embrace a spirit of reconciliation, peace, and justice.
