SISTER OF THE SORROWFUL MOTHER

Sister of the Sorrowful Mother –  Sister Amalia Rose of the Cross, S.S.M.                                                                                             Sorore Charitatis a Mater Dolorosa                                                                                                    “The Crib, the Cross, and the Tabernacle”

Foundress:  Venerable Mother Frances Streitel

Place:  Rome, Italy

Year:  1883 A.D.

Her Charism:  By uniting an active Franciscan life with the Carmelite contemplation, this Sister believes that in transforming herself first, the face of the earth will be transformed.        A deep respect and loving concern for others, generosity, simplicity, humility, penance, and love for the Cross permeate all her work with the poor and the sick.  In her own poverty, she seeks the Lord above all with the words etched in her heart, “Lord, I desire nothing but You, but You I desire to possess entirely.”  This Sister knows that humanity conceals two jewels in its midst and so seldom appreciates their value – they are the poor and the sick.  Uniting the active with contemplative life, and striving to remedy the spiritual and social misery of mankind, she participates in the mission of Jesus to bring fuller life to others by revealing    the love of God for all, especially the poor in hospitals, homes, and orphanages.
