Foundress: Mother Mary Catherine McAuley (Catherine Elizabeth McAuley)

Her Charism: This Sister embraces a life of contemplation, charitable action and the true spirit of the Order, Mercy. In addition to taking vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, she takes a fourth vow of service, uniting the active with the contemplative life. She casts herself entirely into the arms of Divine Providence, and with a spirit of hospitality, justice, and compassion, exercises all the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy with joy. With her distinctive mark of mercy (which pardons again and again) and an ardent desire to be united to God and serve the poor, this Sister can be found teaching in grade schools, high schools, and colleges, nursing, working with children and the elderly, visiting the sick and imprisoned, managing hospitals and orphanages, and aiding distressed women.
